Office of the DPP in Rodrigues
Fair, efficient and impartial Criminal Justice System is and remains a priority for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. The Sub-office in Port Mathurin was inaugurated on 9th December 2011 by the DPP, Mr. Satyajit Boolell, Senior Counsel, to ensure the constant presence of law officers on the island. Rodrigues is henceforth provided with criminal prosecution services at all times. It is no longer the case for the Chief Officer of Police in Rodrigues to refer case files to the DPP's office in Mauritius for legal advice. The file is referred to the law officer on duty in Rodrigues. This measure has considerably contributed to cuts on delays and to ensure speedy trials. This website also provides a summary of the cases dealt with by the office in Rodrigues on a monthly basis. This will enable all stakeholders to have a better understanding of the work carried out by the ODPP - Rodrigues. In addition to Court work, law officers attending Rodrigues are encouraged to undertake two important tasks, namely:
- 1. Training of law enforcement officers;
- 2. Creating awareness among students in relation to the criminal justice system and the evil consequences of crime.
The training of these officers ensures fairness in the investigations, effective gathering of evidence so that only deserving cases are referred to Court. Since the opening of the office, the Director and law officers have also met students of Form 1 to form 3 from Terre Rouge College, Rodrigues College and Grande Montagne College. Copies of 'Tanya so Zistwar' have been distributed amongst students. This website will also be a source of reference for all stakeholders who want to have quick access to relevant enactments applicable to Rodrigues.
