The Commonwealth chooses the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mauritius to host the prosecution mentoring programme for the region. The mentoring will be conducted by Mr Nicolas Cowdery, former DPP of New South Wales.
Mr Cowdery was admitted to the Bar in 1971 and he commenced practice as a Public Defender in Papua New Guinea. From 1974 to 1994 he was in private practice at the Sydney Bar, where he practised largely in criminal law (prosecuting and defending), common law, administrative law and some commercial law. He became DPP of New South Wales in 1994 until March 2011 when he retired. Mr Cowdery has been President of the International Association of Prosecutors from 1999 until 2005 when he became IAP Honorary Member. He is also a member of several international human rights bodies. On 27th June 2011, at the opening ceremony of the Annual Conference of the IAP in Seoul, Mr Cowdery was awarded the Medal of Honour.
